Oct 31, 2014 8:44 AM

David Wright will wear a new helmet when he returns to the Mets this week. Wright is hoping to return to the Mets on Tuesday after being hit in the helmet with a fastball two weeks ago. The new helmet, made by Rawlings, is called the S100 and will be required in the minor leagues beginning next season. In addition, six of the helmets are being sent to each major league team to try out this season. "I imagine they got some pretty smart people that designed them so I'm sure it works pretty good," Wright told the Associated Press. "If it provides more safety, then I'm all for it."

Mets Cancel Fall Instructional League

Nov 11, 2014 2:00 AM

Former Mets general manager Jim Duquette said on SIRIUS XM Radio that the team has canceled their fall instructional league for minor leaguers. The move is obviously cost-driven. "There's a lot of talk and I believe this is information that has not gotten out," said Duquette. "... The Mets have made a decision, and some organizations do this, but they've decided not to have what's called their instructional league, which is, for their minor leagues, it's an opportunity to develop [and] continue to develop your young players. And there's some debate within circles over the past couple years the true value of instructional league but most organizations have a version of it. They're not going to do it. Now the rumors within the scouting circles are that they can't afford - which it roughly costs about 300 grand to staff and to invite and fly down all the players, to having meals throughout for about, it's like a 4 to 5 week program. It gives you a chance to extend the development of your young players, of your prospects. And they're not gonna have it. They have canceled it for this fall. And to me, being a development guy, that's big news. If you're development oriented, it's not a good decision in my opinion." The Mets told the New York Daily News that they are hosting a comparable camp in the Dominican Republic.

Tejada Denies He Tipped Pitches

Jul 19, 2014 6:16 AM

Miguel Tejada is denying a claim by the New York Times that he tipped pitches to opponents in 2001. "I've never tipped pitches," Tejada told MLB.com on Sunday. "I love this game and that's not the way I play it. I'm a proud player. I would never do such a thing. It's tough to get a hit. And for me to tip pitches to anybody, that's crazy. I play for my team." His comments came in response to an article published in the Times on Sunday stating that some teammates of Tejada's on 2001 A's suspected him of tipping pitches to fellow Dominicans on other clubs, particularly in lopsided games. "It really shocked me to the point of disbelief," Tim Hudson, then a young pitcher for the A's and now with the Braves, told the Times. "But I figured, if that's an issue where we need to clear the air a bit, then we need to clear the air a little bit. "That's the ultimate betrayal from a teammate. You hope it doesn't happen. You hope that your sense of team with your players comes before any sort of friendship with somebody on another team. Winning of the game should come first and foremost. Does it go on? I would hope that it doesn't. That's not to say that it hasn't happened. But who's to know?"

Dave Duncan Could Leave Cardinals

Dave Duncan isn't sure whether this season will be his final as pitching coach of the Cardinals. "I'm not ready to make that decision right now," Duncan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "When I do, it will be a personal decision, not a professional one." Duncan is in his 14th season as the team's pitching coach and his 30th overall. He has been a little more open following the team's decision to trade his son, outfielder Chris Duncan, and is known to be upset in the wake of the deal.

Big Unit Expects To Pitch This Season Out Of Pen

Jun 30, 2014 10:39 PM

Randy Johnson expects to return to the mound for the Giants in 2009 as a reliever. Johnson, 45, is on the 60-day disabled list and has been sidelined since July 6 with a strained left shoulder. The 300-game winner has acknowledged that pitching deep into games would be an issue at this point, making a move to the bullpen likely. "Starting is out for me now, because I've been out for two months," Johnson said Sunday. "When this happened, I was really discouraged. I'm late in my career, not early. It's not something I envisioned. ... It would be nice to come back in some capacity and help the team. Right now I'm just trying to get healthy." The Giants are hoping that he'll be able to throw off the mound later this week.
